A new China Railway High-Speed (CRH) route connecting Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi province, and Lanzhou, capital of Gansu province, began operations on July 9.
A total of 17 trains, at an interval of 22 minutes, departed Xi'an North Railway Station, selling over 8,200 tickets in mere two hours, according to Wang Jianlin, director of the Xi'an Railway Bureau's passenger transport department.
Passengers were treated to "Silk Road culture" along the route, with decorations sprucing up the train and folk performances. Travel guides available via scanning QR codes and a reading corner also provided a leisurely pastime during the journey.
"The high-speed railway will be our first choice to go back home to Xining," said Ma Shaojie and Ma Jun, students from Xi'an International Studies University, who exchanged a 12-hour train ticket for the new four-hour CRH route on July 6.
